Carson Tahoe Medical Center is a comprehensive healthcare network featuring two hospitals, two urgent cares, an emergent care center, outpatient services, and a provider network with 21 regional locations. It was Nevada’s first baby-friendly hospital. This stunning 352,000 square foot facility sits on an 80-acre campus which serves Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Carson Valley, South Reno, Dayton, Lake Tahoe, Yerington, and beyond.
Carson Tahoe chose Soleran’s Mock Survey program after having an in-house, mid-cycle survey and wanting to be prepared for their end-of-year accreditation survey. Lance Woolf of the Soleran Mock Survey team was a former Facility Director at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, as well as a former Joint Commission surveyor. The Carson Tahoe facility team knew they would be in good hands.
The Carson Tahoe facility team was doing their own midcycle surveys and wanted to ensure they were covering the changing standards well. They did not want to miss any item that needed mitigation before their yearly accreditation survey. With high staff turnover due to COVID, Carson Tahoe wanted their facility as prepared as possible and the physical environment as safe as possible even with fewer and/or new staff. The Carson Tahoe facility team wanted to fine-tune the compliance needs of their hospital before their next accreditation survey.
Soleran’s Mock Survey program was selected to prepare and educate the facility for its annual survey. This was Carson Tahoe’s first time doing a mock survey, outside an accreditation agency. They choose Soleran’s mock survey program because of its reputation for being informative and non-punitive.
Carson Tahoe found Soleran’s Mock Survey program to be comprehensive and educational. Staff had a better understanding of what surveyors would be looking for. They also improved on processes and creating process transparency, as well as follow-up, re-testing, and documentation. The Carson Tahoe facility team was able to better schedule fire drills. They also improved processes around fire sprinkler heads, as well as generator testing. “This was not uncomfortable. In fact, it made us feel more confident that we were already on the right track,” explained Travis Burt, Carson Tahoe Medical Center.
Soleran’s Mock Survey team used a proprietary software during the mock survey known as the Compliance Survey Dashboard. This tool keeps track of all deficiencies and plans for mitigation while creating reports for the accreditation surveyor. The additional use of technology during the mock survey also allowed Carson Tahoe to see some new technology best practices. “The best practices have given us a stronger understanding of our facilities’ compliance needs,” said Travis Burt, Carson Tahoe Medical Center.
The team saw the mock survey as a learning opportunity and plan to continue. “It would be in our best interest to do one (mock survey) at least every year or year and a half,” explained Amber Moore at Carson Tahoe Medical Center.
